Knight in shining … sweatpants? After taking some serious heat for an off-the-cuff comment she made about everyone’s (well, not everyone’s) favorite loungewear being the number one cause of divorce, Eva Mendes found a handsome defender in the form of her longtime boyfriend (and father of her daughter Esmerelda) Ryan Gosling.

“Obviously sweatpants thing was a joke. Wearing them now. That’s right, tweeting in sweatpants. Rats! Said too much! You win again Twitter,” he wrote on the social network. And since he rarely tweets (having just recently returned to Twitter after a two-year hiatus) you know he takes cozy clothes (and his lady’s honor) very seriously.
The Mendes quote in question: “You can’t do sweatpants,” she said on Extra while promoting her makeup line, Circa. “Ladies, number one cause of divorce in America, sweatpants, no!” Her comment inspired impassioned reader defense of sweats in the comments, as well as a deep dive into how other celebrities feel about them (some are very much for, others incredibly against).
So now that Gosling has resolved that issue, all that’s left to do is wonder about his sweats of choice. Is he a Snuggie guy? Pajama jeans? A nice snug pair of yoga pants? Those Sorority Fun Run and Pancake Breakfast 2005 ones we mentioned yesterday? C’mon, Ryan, get on Instagram and show us!
